Spyware can be used to monitor your activities on the internet and is generally used for gain information for marketing purposes however it can be used to gather more personal data like bank details. Adware refers to programs installed on your computer that can cause unwanted pop up adverts and banners. Without adequate protection these programs can clog up computer slowing down your connection to the internet of even stopping access altogether. There are several programs listed below to combat these problems and it is best to use all of them in together for maximum protection.
Ad-Aware is designed to remove known Data-mining, aggressive advertising, Parasites, Scumware, selected traditional Trojans, Dialers, Malware, Browser hijackers, and tracking components. While this version is free they do offer a paid for version that comes with more features.
Spybot Search & Destroy does a similar job to Ad-aware but can catch some spyware/adware that Ad-aware cannot
