Hilary Crook
Hilary acts for a number of universities and private landlords and is recognised as a leader in her field. She is regularly consulted by representative bodies in the HE sector and advises the largest of the tenancy deposit protection schemes.
An experienced trainer, who informs, stimulates and occasionally entertains.
Neil Marsden
Neil Marsden is an independent environmental health consultant specialising in housing. He is a qualified Environmental Health Officer with over thirty years experience working with four different local authorities. His practical experience is backed up with academic achievements that include, in addition to his professional degree in Environmental Health, an Honours degree in Food Science, a Masters degree in Environmental Pollution Science and a Diploma in Management Studies.
Twenty-three years of his time in local government were spent working for Leeds City Council as a housing and area renewal specialist and the last ten of those working with the private rented sector. Prior to his leaving Leeds Council in November 2006 he held a key policy role for housing standards and in particular the implementation of the changes that have been brought about by the Housing Act 2004. Neil has considerable expertise in HMOs and is a former chairman of the Yorkshire and Humberside HMO Network.
As an early pioneer in the development of landlord accreditation schemes, Neil developed and managed the Leeds Landlords Accreditation Scheme. In 2001, in partnership with Unipol Student Homes, Neil established the Accreditation Network UK (ANUK) and was its first Chairman. ANUK publicises, promotes and shares good practice in the development and operation of accreditation schemes. Neil sits on the ANUK steering group and is chairman of the Committee of Management of the ANUK/UNIPOL Code of Standards for Larger Student Developments
Neil is also an environmental health consultant to the national Residential Landlords Association.
John Martin
Is a barrister and played a significant role in the recent Law Commission's review on tenure with Professor Martin Partington.
John has wide experience of litigation on disrepair, harassment and illegal eviction, housing rights and the right to education, including actions in further and higher education.
John is also Chair of the ANUK Tribunal for the Codes of Practice for Larger Student Developments.
Philip Moxon
A qualified Environmental Health Officer with over 30 years experience as a housing professional with memberships of the Chartered Institute of Environmental Health, the Royal Society of Health, and the Chartered Institute of Housing.
He has worked for a number of local authorities and during his time at a large West Midlands City Council, specialised in the enforcement of housing standards in the private rented sector with particular emphasis on houses in multiple occupation. Philip has also lectured extensively on a number of undergraduate courses at the University of Central England eventually becoming a Visiting Fellow to the School of Housing from 1997 onwards.
In 2001 Philip established his own consultancy specialising in risk assessment of residential accommodation with particular reference to the Housing Health and Safety Rating System (HHSRS) and has since completed risk assessments on student accommodation for a large number of Universities and Colleges. In 2003 he was selected by Warwick University to be a national trainer on the Housing Health and Safety Rating System together with statutory enforcement and has delivered training courses for local authority staff and other organisations nationally.
Aside from this core team, Unipol has many guest speakers (academics, architects, surveyors, housing association personnel, vice chancellors, students' union officials and international speakers).
Many of these student housing professionals make their time and expertise available for free or for very low fees in order that others can learn from their experience and expertise.
