House Hunting 2017 - end of summer analysis

Take me to the UCAS Clearing Update

House Hunting Launch 2017

With over 3,500 students given an early access invitation to view the Unipol website on 20th January 2017, the site saw 29,996 adverts viewed from 6,225 property searches.  This activity continued into the official launch date with a further 9,720 property searches conducted and 34,260 adverts viewed. The first four days of house hunting saw 30,151 property searches and 134,453 advert views.

The story from January 2017

The site remains busy with 213,098 property searches and 768,555 adverts viewed to the end of October 2017. Since the start of house hunting on 21st January there have been 118,522 sessions with 65,415 being unique.

House hunting 2017 got off to a strong start and after a quieter period across April and May activity picked up across the summer as many students looked to secure accommodation before September 2017.

Summer activity and admissions 2017

July increases were predominantly from postgraduates and international students.  A number of undergraduate students are returning now to find a room having not wanted to pay rent over the summer period.

Activity over August and September has been strong as the University of Leeds saw an increase in applications (up over 10%) following being named 'University of the Year 2017' by The Times and The Sunday Times' Good University Guide.  Leeds Beckett University has show further decreases in applications but this does not mean that their admissions will fall accordingly.

Clearing Update

Universities and Colleges in Leeds opened clearing on 18 August 2017. This saw activity on the website grow significantly as students who were offered places looked to secure accommodation.

As of 14th September 2017 505,680 students had been placed, of which 46,310 had been through clearing.   The overall figure is 1% down on 2016 as is the figure for those placed through clearing, which is likewise 1% down. The Clearing process has become very competitive with universities showing their commitment to confirm students as quickly as possible.

Indications are that the University has been successful in converting these into acceptances with a 6.9% growth on 2016 in undergraduates. The University of Leeds continues to do well in recruiting one year taught postgraduate internationals with a projected 17% increase on 2016. The University has “bought into” larger purpose build developments to house their additional students including 154 rooms in Mary Morris House (managed by Unipol) and 200 in IQ Leeds.

Leeds Beckett University appears to have met its targets which essentially saw level intake between 2016-2017 and 2017-2018.

Firm conclusions will be drawn in the next few months.
