The Meadows

This area has a bit of a Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde quality about it. The meadows estate itself, all yellow brick high rises and maze like alleyways, is a testament to planning mistakes of the 1970s. The Old Meadows, however, boast glorious terraces with generous rooms and lovely views of Victoria Embankment. It’s also one of the cheapest city areas - and although most students travel to lectures by bus, you can walk into town without breaking sweat. The area is favoured by Nottingham Trent students based either at the City or Clifton campuses. In summer the Embankment is the venue for the Riverside Festival and variety of other community events.

The R4, R5, 34 (term time), 35, 36 & 37 all go via Canning Circus.

Radford / Hyson Green / Forest Fields

A popular student area that has improved greatly in recent years, particularly with the arrival of the tram and the Asda supermarket. There tends to be a lot of Nottingham Trent University students here, because their buildings are a short walk or tram ride away. This is a multicultural area with a strong community feel to it, with a long line of shops stretching down Radford Road.
It’s got a great social conscience too; places like the Sumac Centre in Gladstone Road have a café, live music and a throng of veggie fans. The world famous Goose Fair on the Forest Recreation Grounds in October draws huge crowds.
Housing standards are sometimes lower here, but the rents are usually slightly less. If you do find a house here then, as always think carefully about the security of the property and how you are going to get from your house to your lectures and back again.

Sneinton / St Annes

Student living is sporadic to the east of the city centre. But there is new accommodation (some complete, some under construction) on the edge of St Ann’s and you’ll find flats and housing everywhere from Sneinton to Sherwood.

Sneinton has probably the most diverse cultural and social-economic mix in the city. It brushes the city centre at one end and stretches out towards both the River Trent and Colwick Woods at the other.

To the North is the much maligned St Ann’s. It boasts a fantastic community spirit and much work is going on to return the area to its former gloriy and bring people into highlights such as Victoria Park.
