10th Joint Codes Conference - Delivering Diversity and Ensuring Equality Within Student Accommodation

Each member of the ANUK/Unipol or UUK Codes is entitled to TWO FREE PLACES.

A one day conference designed to provide those involved in the day to day operation of student accommodatin that is covered by the UUK and ANUK/Unipol Codes with the opportunity to share ideas and good practice and, above all, to network with others who are managing accommodation within this sector.

10.10am - 11.10amEnabling Access for Disabled Students: Eva Crossan Jory and Piers Wilkinson, from NUS will give their thoughts on how the PBSA sector as a whole could improve access for disabled students. They will then be joined by Martin Blakey, Unipol Student Homes, Jayne Conboye (Universities UK Code) and Paul Rowlinson (IQ Students), who as a panel will give their thoughts and then answer questions from the floor.

11.30am - 12.10amParallel Sessions 1: Three workshops focusing on specific topics:

(1) Proposed Changes to the Code for Non-Educational Establishments  Jane Crouch, Fresh Property Group

(2) Preventing Students from Feeling Excluded Jenny Shaw, Student Experience Director, UNITE

(3) OIA Update: Handling Student Complaints and Appeals Craig Howlett, Office of the Independent Adjudicator

13.10am - 13.55pmInnovation and Best Practice in Student Accommodation: Delegates will be divided into groups, led by a facilitator, and invited to share examples of best practice in respect of a range of issues as submitted by delegates in advance, as well as reflections on issues discussed in the opening session.

Speakers

Craig Howlett is an Assistant Adjudicator at the Office of the Independent Adjudicator (OIA) where he reviews student complaints and appeals. He has worked in various roles within the higher education sector for the last twenty years. Craig has previously worked with accommodation departments at the University of Essex, as an Associate Dean of Students, and the University of Leicester as the Welfare Officer for Accommodation.
