Kick start the New Year, Nottingham!

09/01/2023

Welcome back! We hope you had a relaxing Christmas break and are looking forward to whatever 2024 has in store for you.

January can be a slow month for many but it is also a great opportunity to revive yourself and set your intentions for the year ahead.

With the aftermath of the festive break and exam season upon us, here are some tips to help you start the year positively.

Self-care

Taking care of yourself can come in many forms. It’s important to regularly take time to switch off from the world and solely concentrate on your mental wellbeing. Try having a relaxing hot bath, get an early night or lose yourself in a good book. Having daily ‘no social media’ breaks can also positively impact your mental health.

The Outdoors

Nothing wards off low spirits like fresh air! Exercise can be the best way to care for your body and mind and help you relax. There are lots of beautiful walks in Nottingham to explore with many right on your doorstep. Take a walk around Nottingham’s historical sights with this handy walking guide. Try something new

If you are feeling a bit fatigued and unenthusiastic, it might be time to try something new. New skills or hobbies can open many doors and even initiate new friendships. Taking up a new hobby can also be a great way to boost your confidence and relieve stress. Take a look on your Students’ Union’s website to browse clubs and societies that you might be interested in.

Company

Feelings of loneliness will negatively impact your mood. Regularly chatting with friends or family can often boost your mindset. Make the first move and check-in with friends or why not reconnect with an old friend?

Money

Looking at your budget might not instantly make you happy but in the long run being aware of your finances may stop any nasty surprises later on. Set yourself some saving targets to treat yourself later in the year. Check out this useful online budgeting tool from Nottingham University.

If you are struggling with your mental health, don’t keep it to yourself. There are many people around you that want to help. If you don’t feel like you can speak to family or friends, your Students’ Union have support teams who are trained to help students to deal with stress or mental health problems. Check your university’s website, ask at your Students’ Union, or Unipol Tenants can contact Unipol’s Tenancy Support & Wellbeing Team.

We hope you have a fantastic year and good luck to those sitting exams this month!
