Alex Sobel MP Meets with Unipol CEO

31/07/2025

Unipol's CEO Sam Bailey-Watts, and Jess Carrier, the Unipol National Codes Coordinator, discussed a range of issues with respect to the proposed amendments to the Code in readiness for the new Renters Rights' Bill that will deliver the government's manifesto commitment to transform the experience of private renting.

Alex spoke of his strongly held view around the need for standards to be maintained throughout the PBSA sector and that the Unipol National Codes were seen as the sole reason for exempting members from many of the changes to be introduced by the new legislation.

It was acknowledged that although some members may consider some of the Code's changes to be difficult to contend with, the suggestion of any variation to the non-mandatory Codes would not be in the best interests of the wider sector.

Sam Bailey-Watts said,

"Unipol has been grateful for the support of the MHCLG, the Department of Education and Alex over recent months and years. Our aim throughout this consultation process has been to enhance standards for students whilst being mindful of any impact to our members, many of whom have been incredibly supportive of the team.

We are very much looking forward to assisting the government and the sector in developing new ways of creating long-term relationships between all stakeholders involved in the UK student accommodation sector. It remains an integral part of Higher Education's offer to new students, both domestic and international".
