Being Queer in Halls - Welcoming LGBTQ+ Students to your Accommodation

Summary

There are lots of things to consider when welcoming students who are part of the LGBTQ+ community. Do they feel that they need to socially transition once again? Have they come out to their family, or is this a new freedom where they can explore their identity for the first time? Have they been placed with someone who has never had interaction with someone from the Queer community before? Do they know where the safe spaces are in the new city? As part of this session, we will take some time to explore some of concerns and think about how we can best support them during this potentially difficult time of upheaval.

This online session gives a great introduction for staff working in privately provided student accommodation and the Higher Education Sector who want to discover the biggest issues and concerns faced by the LGBTQ+ community. The session aims to clarify terminology, introduce methods of combating homophobia, biphobia and transphobia in accommodation, and show some of the lived experiences of LGBTQ+ students – all in an attempt to improve the student experience for this community.
